DIY Basics How to Safely Disconnect a Radiator from the Wall

Inspiration

There are many reasons why you may want to remove your radiator from the wall. Whether you need to carry out crucial maintenance tasks like flushing or you want to replace your radiator entirely, doing it yourself can save money. However, it’s important to be cautious to avoid damage to your heating system or home plumbing. Of course, if you prefer, professionals are always available to help.

What You’ll Need

  • A radiator bleed key

  • A screwdriver

  • A bucket and a hose

  • Safety gloves

How to Safely Disconnect a Radiator from the Wall

  1. Turn off your radiators.
Before starting, switch off the central heating system and allow your radiator to cool completely. This usually takes 45 minutes to an hour, but err on the side of caution.

  2. Bleed/drain the radiator.
Attach a hose to the bottom valve and funnel water into a bucket or drain to prevent leaks and water damage.

  3. Locate and remove clips or wall brackets.
Most radiators, such as Single Radiators or Double Radiators, are fixed to walls with clips or brackets at the top and bottom. Remove these carefully, then disconnect the pipes attached to the radiator.

  4. Remove the radiator from the wall.
Once clips and pipes are detached, gently take the radiator off the wall and place it safely on the floor.
