Inspiration

  • Improve your radiators’ efficiency, lowering your energy bills in the process

  • Reduce the chances of dealing with maintenance issues

  • Prevent the build-up of dust and rust

  • Keep your home looking its best

Read on to find out how to clean your radiators properly!

How To Clean Your Radiators

Exterior Cleaning

Cleaning the exterior of your Single Radiators or Double Radiators is relatively easy. For example, you’ll likely get great results by using hot, soapy water and a microfibre cloth to wipe away dirt and grime.

You can also buy specific radiator brushes that allow you to remove dust from hard-to-reach areas, such as between the panels of Horizontal Radiators or between the wall and your Vertical Radiators.

If rust is present, start by using sandpaper to remove the bulk of it. Then apply a specialist rust treatment before continuing with your usual cleaning routine.

Interior Cleaning (Flushing)

Cleaning the interior of your radiator, also known as flushing, removes sludge and pollutants from your radiator or heating system.

  1. Turn off your heating system and allow it to cool.

  2. Place a bowl or bucket beneath the valve to catch water.

  3. Turn your radiator valve until you hear air escaping — usually a loud ‘hissing’ sound. You’ve done this step when water starts leaking out.

  4. Bleed your radiator to remove trapped air.

  5. Unscrew the radiator and let excess water drain out. It’s best to do this outdoors to avoid water damage.

  6. Attach a hose to the radiator and flush clean, fresh water through the system. Continue until the water runs clear and free from debris.

Pro Tip: Ask for Help if Needed

Cleaning radiators, both inside and out, can be time-consuming and sometimes complex. Don’t hesitate to ask for help — the last thing you want is to cause lasting damage, which can be expensive to repair.
