Investing in a radiator that’s the wrong size for the room you want to install it in can be a real disaster. If it doesn’t fit the space, the location, or even the plumbing pipes it needs to connect to, you’ll have to go back to the drawing board and buy another one.
However, it’s quite an easy mistake to make. That’s why Radiator Village offers a full refunds policy for all radiator orders in our shop. If you’ve bought a radiator in the wrong size, we want to make it easy for you to afford the right sized one!
To help you avoid this hassle, we’ve put together a guide to ensure the radiator you’re considering is the perfect fit for your home. Here’s what you need to know about measuring and calculating radiator space.
Measure Your Current Radiator (If You’re Replacing One)
If you’re replacing a radiator, measuring the existing one is the easiest way to find the perfect size for your new radiator.
Make sure to measure both the height (top to bottom) and width (side to side). This will give you dimensions that you know will work in your available space.
Also, measure the height and width of the wall space where you plan to install the radiator. This helps especially if you want to change the style — for example, swapping a Single Radiator for a Double Radiator, or going from a Horizontal Radiator to a Vertical Radiator.
Measure Between the Pipes
This is a crucial measurement as it sets the maximum size of the radiator based on your home’s plumbing setup. Measure the distance from where the pipe meets the radiator valve on one side to the same point on the other side.
Think of this measurement as the hard limit for your new radiator. Even if the wall space has room for a larger or differently oriented radiator, it still needs to fit this pipe spacing.
Measure the Depth Available
If you want your radiator to be more of a statement piece, the depth (distance between the wall and the front of the radiator) matters a lot.
Most people measure from the wall to the nearest piece of furniture or obstruction to get the maximum depth that won’t interfere with your home’s layout.
If you’re replacing a radiator, you can also measure from the wall to the back of the existing radiator. This helps you determine whether you’ll need new brackets to fit a thicker radiator, such as some of our Flat Designer Radiators or Oval Radiators.
