You’ve just turned on your heating and noticed a radiator that is warm at the bottom but cold at the top. It’s a classic sign that it needs bleeding, but there’s one small hiccup — you can’t find your radiator key.
Not to worry! At Radiator Village, we know how common this is, and we’ve got your back. The good news is that you can still bleed most radiators without a key, and we’ll show you how to do it safely and effectively in this short guide.
Why Bleed Your Radiators?
Radiators collect air in the system over time. This trapped air stops hot water from filling the radiator properly, causing cold spots and reduced heat output. When you bleed the radiator, the air is released, restoring full warmth and helping your system run more efficiently. Not only will this mean better comfort, but it could also lower your energy bills.
What Can You Use Instead of a Radiator Key?
Most modern radiators have a standard bleed valve, which features a small square or a slotted screw. If you’ve lost your bleed key, you can use a Flathead screwdriver, pliers, an adjustable spanner, or even a butter knife.
If your radiator has a recessed or square valve (as many do), a proper bleed key is still the safest long-term option. But for a quick fix, these tools can get the job done.
How to Bleed the Radiator Without a Key
-
Let the system cool completely before starting by turning off the heating. Bleeding a hot radiator can be dangerous.
-
Find the bleed valve, usually located at the top of the radiator. You’ll see a small valve with a slot or square centre.
-
Place an old towel or cloth under the valve and have a container ready to catch any drips to protect your floors.
-
Loosen the valve using a Flathead screwdriver or one of the tools mentioned. Slowly turn the valve anti-clockwise. You’ll hear a hissing sound as the air escapes.
-
When a steady stream of water starts to flow, tighten the valve by turning it clockwise. Don’t overtighten — just enough to stop the flow.
-
Check your boiler pressure. Bleeding radiators can cause a small drop in pressure, and if your boiler pressure is low afterward, top it up using the filling loop (check your boiler manual for guidance).
-
Switch the heating back on and check the radiator. It should now be warm from top to bottom.
